What does Hunger Strike Mean? Epitomized Hunger Strikes

A hunger strike is an act showing that one does not accept an attitude, practice or event and protests against these circumstances. It also means a demand to get the rights that one deserve with a method of only having sugar, water and salt in order to feed the body but not other nutrients. Hunger strike means a defense of rights and honor of a person with giving up from every cell of the body. There are several types of hunger strike as indefinite or definite, irreversible, reversible, as a tool for supporting or as a warning. Definite hunger strikes are mostly made for underlining an issue or a problem with a method of specific time table and also with an announcement. Indefinite hunger strike, on the contrary, continues until the demands are met. Hunger strikes have been made around the world with different demands and methods. First example was seen in the Ireland. Before christianity, people who were accused waited for one night and stayed hungry, in front of the door of the people who accused them. In Russia, people from Taganka Prison made hunger strikes in order to be free. Suffragettes from United Kingdom and USA used this method also and this was an effective tool for them to win the right of vote. In 1917, Republican Irish made this protest against the exploitation of Britain during the Independence War. In 1981 the political prisoners from IRA made hunger strike against the stereotype prison clothes and pressures in the prison. In Turkey, Nazım Hikmet, a poet and political prisoner from Turkey, also made the first hunger strike protest against the twelve year of punishment in the prison without any rightful accusation against him. he started in 1950 and his resistance and strike ended with victory. Hunger strikes have been widely used in the Turkey’s prisons and these were led to the some victories in the prisons. In 2011, Hüsnü Yıldız, who wanted to have his brother’s corpse from a mass grave, started a hunger strike and his resistance resulted with victory. Türkan Albayrak, who was a labor in the Paşabahçe State Hospital, started a hunger strike in 2010; Cansel Malatyalı, who was a labor in the Chamber of Civil Engineers started a hunger strike in 2012 and Hatice Yüksel, who was an English teacher, started a hunger strike in 2015 when they were all dismissed from their work and all protests ended with victory.

FROM 9 MARCH, WE ARE ON INDEFINITE AND IRREVERSIBLE HUNGER STRIKE WITH THE DEMAND OF HAVING OUR JOBS BACK. WE ARE CALLING ALL LABORERS TO SUPPORT OUR RESISTANCE.

WE WANT OUR JOB BACK, WE WILL GET IT!

WE WILL WIN WITH OUR HUNGER!
